DECATUR -- After decades of working in cramped quarters, one Macon County police department will soon have a little more leg room. Decatur Police are already getting to work on their new headquarters.

Police Chief Todd Walker said, "We've kind of been held back, because of the restrictions that we've had in our current location."

That's why police and other city leaders are so excited to break ground on a new station. Well, new to them.

They are re-developing an empty building on Southside Drive. It will give the department three times the amount of space they have now, and plenty of parking.

"We'll now be able to multi-task. Do multiple operations that we're capable of doing. We just haven't had the opportunity to do," said Walker.

But moving an entire police station across town will not be easy.

Walker said, "We have to operate 24/7. We're not gonna shut down for a couple of days to move."

Which means a lot of planning, and a lot of moving parts behind the scene. Walker says the hard part has begun, but people here shouldn't notice any major difference in the meantime.

"We're gonna try to make it as seamless as possible."

After a decade of planning, the city says the new station should be up and running by next summer. The city is paying $500,000 per year to lease the building. They have it for the next 20 years, and they say that is cheaper than building a brand new station.
