Fallen soldier honored at UI

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- A former UI student is being honored for her service in the National Guard.
UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- A former UI student is being honored for her service in the National Guard. She died while serving in 2004. The university is putting up a memorial for Sergeant Shawna Morrison and dedicating it this weekend.

Morrison was the first woman from the state's National Guard killed while serving in Iraq. She was also the first Illinois student to die in combat while she was actively enrolled. Sergeant Morrison was a psychology major.

Her memorial will be put in the north courtyard of Lincoln Hall. It's an honor those who served with her say is well-deserved.

Sergeant Morrison enlisted when she was just 17. She served with the 1544th Transportation Company based in Paris.

Her family, as well as others who served with here, will attend the dedication this weekend. The ceremony is open to the public. It starts at 3 pm, Sunday, at the Lincoln Hall Theater on campus.
