URBANA -- Authorities say 88-year old Norma Jean Andrews died Monday night of smoke inhalation from a fire in her home. Her neighbors say she was shy and kept to herself. But even if she didn't talk much, she spoke to the community in a different ways. WCIA-3's Anthony Antoine has more.

Walking to the bus stop, Catherine Blandford would see an old woman she didn't know much about.

"I didn't even know her name until today, but I would see her and I would smile."

Neighbors say she had a love for gardening and enjoyed seeing the seasons change.

"Every once in a while I would see her out and she would be picking in the flower beds."

Another neighbor, Aisha Chiara-Monte agrees with Blandford.

"She really enjoyed her flowers, so she would garden in the back and sometimes she would sit and she would have a chair and just sit there and just relax."

Andrews died with the flowers she loved so much. Her house, now wrapped in caution tape. Blandford says she didn't have family in the area.

"I'm just really sad because she died all alone."

Little did they know, her name will live on inside the Archives of the Urbana Library. Andrews wrote for the Courier Newspaper in the '60's and '70's.

Former co-workers say she was passionate about writing and would sometimes cry at work. That's because Andrews wrote obituaries. Now hers is the one being written.

Neighbors say they didn't know anything was wrong until firefighters got there. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
