CHAMPAIGN -- A fire could have been worse if it wasn't for the quick actions of a homeowner. The home on West Church caught fire Sunday morning.

The homeowner smelled smoke and called 911. He also tried to put it out with a garden hose. When the blaze got out of control, he ran next door to alert neighbors. Everyone was OK, but both homes were severely damaged.

CHAMPAIGN -- A fire which started at one home, ended up spreading next door. About 3:30 am, firefighters were called out to a garage fire at 1521 West Church Street.

When they arrived on scene, they found it spreading to the neighboring house. A second wave of firefighters were called to the scene.

It took them more than three hours to put fire out. Nobody was hurt, but one firefighter was treated at the scene. Authorities say two family pets died in the fire. The cause is under investigation.
