Former theater director honored

URBANA -- A former theater director now has a lasting legacy where he spent decades working. The control room at Urbana High School's theater will be named after Gregory Chew. He was in charge of the department for 32-years.

Staff and former students say Chew was instrumental making the program a success. He retired in 2010, but helped get the theater renovated over the past few years. Current Director Tim Broeker says it is a tribute Chew deserves.

"I've never seen a program so put-together, so built the way it has been built and very student-run. He comes to every single show, I'm pretty sure has his seat in the auditorium he sits in and it's definitely helped me in my transition. I don't know how I would have done it without him."

Just to make things official, Chew was honored with a plaque at Tuesday night's school board meeting. A bronze version of the gift will go on display inside the theater.
