CHAMPAIGN -- Going to the dentist can be scary, but the Champaign Dental Group is trying to make it a little less painful, on your wallet at least. WCIA-3's Erica Quednau went to Friday's Free Dental Day.

If you've been putting off a trip to the dentist, Friday was the day to stop procrastinating. The Champaign Dental Group offered free cleanings, extractions and fillings to anyone who stopped by.

Tons of people took advantage of it. It's the sound and chair many like to avoid. But, going to the dentist is a necessity, even though it can get expensive.

"Probably did put it off too long."

Until now. Dave Duquette braved the long line to work on his smile. One that's been bothering him lately.

"I have a hole in my tooth. Some employees here came to eat at Jersey Mike's. I work there. They mentioned today was free dentistry day."

So, there was no excuse not to come.

"And I was number 54 when I arrived at 8 am, so some people were here earlier than that apparently."

"We had a line, kind of down the sidewalk when we got here at 7:30 this morning. The doors opened at 8 and we were super excited."

Mandi West is a dental hygienist at the Champaign Dental Group.

"Everyone's been so grateful. It's definitely one of my favorite days."

That's because it's a great opportunity to give back to the community they call home.

"We've got everything from tears to thank you, thank you, thank you, to smiles on their faces. It's an amazing feeling."

"Some people that left, I asked them did it hurt and they said everyone was really nice back there, so that calmed some of my fears a little bit."

When the dental work is free, even the fear is worth it.

"It's nice of them to provide free services to the community today, so I have no problem waiting in line."

This is the second year the group has offered Free Dental Day to everyone. The group is planning a day dedicated to kids sometime in the spring or summer.
