Playing scratch off games can be about more than just winning.

The red ribbon lottery game helps pay for HIV and AIDS research here in Illinois, and a Chicago lawmaker hopes that'll continue for years to come.

State Senator Jacqueline Collins is proposing a new bill that would help protect the quality of life fund. It's set to expire at the end of the year. That money is used to help with research here in the state. Without it, many programs wouldn't be able to operate. Advocates say financial support is greatly needed.

Reports estimate that more than 46,000 people have HIV/AIDS in Illinois.
