Girl hit by car has life-threatening injuries

DECATUR -- A 14-year old girl is in critical condition after being hit by a car. Police say she was getting off a bus and walked in front of it on North Martin Luther King. An oncoming car hit her. WCIA-3's Megan Brilley has details.

The 25-year old driver doesn't have any injuries, but could face charges. Police say he didn't have a license. Decatur Public Transit says the fact the teen walked in front of the bus made it hard for oncoming traffic to see her.

When exiting a bus, people are supposed to cross behind the bus after it leaves the curb. A witness says the accident should be a lesson to drivers.

Police say the girl's injuries are life-threatening. They are still investigating, but no arrests have been made.

A spokesperson for DPT says accidents like this are somewhat common. In just the past year-and-a-half, four people have been hit getting off a city bus. All four of those accidents happened on Martin Luther King Junior Drive.

The director says larger flashing lights have been installed on the back of buses to better alert cars traveling behind.
