WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Many Americans are rallying for lawmakers to come to a compromise and avoid a government shutdown. The republican-led House passed a short-term spending bill Friday.

That vote could ultimately trigger a government shutdown. It would impact a lot of people. Federal workers could go without a paycheck. National programs may be suspended.

Financial markets and the economy could take a hit. Even many republican lawmakers are against a shutdown. In the mid-1990's, a government shutdown cost an estimated $1.4 billion.
