Groce challenging young team

CHAMPAIGN -- We are just a couple weeks away from the Illinois basketball team's first exhibition game, and head coach John Groce says he will probably play a pretty big rotation early with only two seniors and seven newcomers competing for playing time.

Wednesday was media day in Champaign as the Orange and Blue get set for the new year.  With such a young team, Groce is hoping they will grow up fast, and he is pushing them to the max every day to ensure that happens.

"We've tried to put them in position where they have to do something really, really difficult every day where they're really taxed," Groce said.  "Whether its a specific drill or something we're doing to put them in a position where they have to handle adversity.  I like what I've seen there.  I think we've gotten a lot better, and we've come a long way since the summer months."

STARKS KEEPING SCHOLARSHIP
Also Oregon State-transfer Ahmad Starks says he has been told he will have a scholarship next year, and he won't be asked to walk on - even though the NCAA denied his hardship waiver.  Starks has to sit out this year; then he'll have one year of eligibility left.  Illinois right now projects to be one scholarship over the limit for 2014.
