Kids on waiting list for mentors

Hundreds of students in Champaign-Urbana are on a waiting list for a mentor.
CHAMPAIGN/URBANA-- Hundreds of students in Champaign-Urbana are on a waiting list for a mentor.
Lauren Smith from the Champaign Unit 4 School District says right now, about 650 students already have mentors, but more are needed.
She says there's a particular need for male mentors in the community.
They pair students and mentors by gender and interests.
Right now, about 60% of the mentors are women and 40% are men.
She says being a mentor is a commitment.
Mentors meet with their students one hour per week on school grounds.

There are two training dates coming up for people who want to be mentors.
They are on October 1st at the Champaign Public Library and October 9th at the Mellon Administrative Building.

If you are interested in being a mentor, you can call Smith at (217) 351-3722.
