CHAMPAIGN -- At a time when trust in Congress has reached an all-time low, an Illinois senator says lawmakers need to come together and compromise.

"We should all come to the table as patriots," Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Illinois) said during an interview with WCIA-3. "Understanding that we're not going to get everything that day. That in the end, when we're all together, America moves forward."

During the sit-down with WCIA-3's Jennifer Roscoe, Kirk said he keeps a copy of the Declaration of Independence in his desk at all times. It's a copy of the document in Thomas Jeffersons' own handwriting. He says the document reminds him of a time when leaders came together and made the ultimate compromise.
