SPRINGFIELD -- It's been almost six months since the special pension committee got to work. Now it may be ready to show its progress to the rest of the General Assembly.

Lawmakers are returning to work next week. The House has scheduled a one-day session on Tuesday, but it's not a typical time of year for lawmakers to be in.

There's no word what exactly will be tackled while they're in town, but it could mean a pension deal is on the table. House Speaker Michael Madigan (D) says there has been some progress toward a deal, but negotiations are still fluid at this point.

If the leaders get in and decide there aren't enough votes for a deal, the day doesn't have to go to waste. Lawmakers could still act on other issues which weren't addressed during veto session.

It's not the first time lawmakers were called back to try to pass a pension deal. They've done the same thing close to a half-dozen times in the past few years. None have been successful.
