Library to cut 18 jobs

DECATUR -- The public library is on the chopping block, facing thousands of dollars in cuts. The board voted Thursday night to trim $160,000 from its budget.

That's just a chunk of the $500,000 the library will have to cut. The cuts will affect 18 of its non-union employees, mainly all managerial or supervisory positions. But city librarian Robert Edwards says it will always be in high demand, and people have no reason to worry.

"We're reevaluating how we can use our resources, our staff. We've always been able to bounce back. That's the great thing about Decatur. Decatur people, we bounce back."

The cuts will be made by the end of the month.
