CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- An Urbana man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for shooting a man last summer. A jury convicted 24-year old Ardis Fenn last month for aggravated battery during an attempted robbery. The man he shot, Curtis Mosley, was killed the night before he was supposed to testify in Fenn's trial.

Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz said they asked for the maximum sentence. and they got it. She said that number was based on Fenn's history and the circumstances around the crime.

The judge released Fenn just before his trial started. That's because one of the attorneys was having medical issues so the trial had to be delayed. Fenn had already been in custody for several months at that point. Through a WCIA-3 News investigation, we found the states crime lab took 154-days to process evidence in that case. But Rietz said she doesn't blame the lab workers for Mosley's death.

"Nobody has a crystal ball," said Rietz. "We certainly didn't expect the witness in this case to be shot, to suffer the way that he did. We simply did not foresee that happening."

Rietz said the only person to blame for the homicide is the person who pulled the trigger. Mosley's family says that was Fenn, but he hasn't been charged with that crime. The crime lab is looking at evidence in Mosley's death. No charges have been filed yet.
