PAXTON -- A man was stabbed to death Thursday night and his son saw it all happen. Police say it started when two men got into a fight outside Shooky's Bar in the 100-block of Market Street. WCIA-3's Megan Brilley spoke with the victim's son.

When police arrived, both men were on the ground. The suspect wasn't moving and the victim was bleeding from his chest. His son was by his side.

It's a quiet town where everyone knows each other on a first-name basis. It's filled with small businesses, all family-owned. But, Thursday night, the town experienced something out of the norm.

"Once in awhile you might hear of a fight. Or, like many places, sometimes, somebody drinks too much, but never anything like this."

Brandon Potts was at Shooky's Bar with his dad, Jeff. He says, when they were leaving, a fight broke out between his dad and 33-year old Sean Kelley. Before he knew it, his dad was on the ground bleeding from his chest.

"I had him in my arms and I just kept telling him I loved him."

Potts served in the Army and hoped what he learned could save his dad's life.

"I was just trying to remember my training and put pressure on his wounds. I didn't have enough hands."

Police say Kelley stabbed 49-year old Jeff Potts to death. Neither man was moving when police arrived on scene. Authorities aren't saying exactly what happened. His family says Jeff was no angel.

"Uncle Jeff has been known to get into fights."

"He was rough around the edges. Anyone around here would tell you that. But, he cared about people. He had a good heart. He didn't deserve this."

Potts recently reconnected with his dad. They were rebuilding their relationship. Even though he's gone, Brandon says he finds comfort in the fact he got to say goodbye.

"I got to tell him I loved him probably twenty times. He's my dad. He's the only one I had and he's gone."

Kelley is charged with second degree murder and aggravated battery. He's being held on $1-million bond.
