Ministry robbed of donations

A charity in Champaign is robbed of donations.
"They're not just taking from an organization. They're taking from the people we serve."

But it may have gone un-noticed - until workers at Salt and Light realized they weren't getting any mail and that was really unusual for this time of year.

It's possible the mail's been missing all week. Over the last week or so Montgomery thought the mail was a little lighter than usual. But it wasn't until Thursday when there was no mail that he became confused. So after asking workers and the postman about the lack of mail, Montgomery determined the mail was in fact stolen.

The mailbox at the salt and light office on Anthony drive was also the drop off for monetary donations.

Salt and Light was using a standard mailbox before the robbery. The ministry actually purchased this drop box earlier last week but put it in a day too late.

Despite being robbed Montgomery has pity for whomever took the donations. "You have to be in a pretty dark and desperate place to steal from a place like this so really my heart goes out to them."

It's unknown exactly how much money was stolen. Montgomery says donations at the end of the year are very important to start the new year off on the right foot.

Montgomery warns anyone who may have donated to the ministry using a check, to be aware of the crime in order to potentially prevent fraud.
Having gone through identity theft about two years ago, Montgomery is concerned about that happening to others.
