MTD receives sustainability certification

CHAMPAIGN-URBANA -- The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District is going green and helping the environment one bus at a time.
CHAMPAIGN-URBANA -- The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District is going green and helping the environment one bus at a time. CUMTD received a new Environmental Sustainability Certification. This means it's reducing waste and consumption of resources.

It is the sixth provider in the country, and the only provider in Illinois, to have this program. Sustainability planner, Jane Sullivan, says CUMTD wants to have a positive impact on the environment.

"I think it really proves our commitment to our riders and community members. It proves our commitment to protecting the environment. You know, a rider can be sure that when they step on the bus, they are choosing the more environmentally-sustainable option rather than driving a single occupancy vehicle."

Riders also share in MTD's smaller carbon footprint since less oil is used, the lifespan of coach batteries is boosted by 20% and non-burnable oil usage is reduced by 70 gallons.
