New bill calls for more transparency

SPRINGFIELD -- The state will soon make it easier to see how grants are spent.
SPRINGFIELD -- The state will soon make it easier to see how grants are spent. A new law will require the state to post financial information for agencies receiving grants.

It comes after several high-profile cases where grantees misused grant funds. Now, the state's Chief Information Officer will have to post the data online. Senator Sam McCann (R-Carlinville) says it helps to keep organizations honest.

"It keeps folks from gaming the system. It makes sure that grant dollars being administered by the State of Illinois are not being used for purposes other than what they should be used for."

Governor Quinn also signed a bill to develop a task force assigned with creating ways of making the state's budgeting process more transparent.
