New housing decision put on hold

CHAMPAIGN -- People need to wait a little longer to find out whether a new housing development will be built north of the UI campus. City planners expected to vote on the "Latitude Project" Wednesday afternoon, but they postponed it until next month.

The planners are still waiting for more information from the developer before making a decision. The area is along University Avenue and Park Street, between Fifth and Wright streets.

Developers want to build four new buildings. The plan includes a ground floor with commercial property and housing above. It would be enough for hundreds of UI students to live in.

Some neighbors say they don't want the extra people and traffic which will come with the development. But, a business owner across the street says he doesn't mind.

Mohammad AL-Heeti has been in business at World Harvest Foods on University Avenue for more than 13 years. He says the view out his front door isn't pretty. He'd rather see new buildings than the empty space and parking lots which are there now.

The Planning Commission could vote on the project on February 5, after members have more information.
