Pantry to open at Parkland for students

CHAMPAIGN -- Students at Parkland College are getting extra help to make ends meet.
CHAMPAIGN -- Students at Parkland College are getting extra help to make ends meet. A food pantry will be opening on campus next month.

Organizers have been working on the idea for years. The Wesley Evening Food Pantry, in Urbana, was started seven years ago. The director says they've been thinking about starting the campus pantry for nearly that long.

To get the word out, Parkland hosted an "Almost Free Lunch" for students Wednesday. They got chili and macaroni and cheese if they brought canned for or money to donate to the cause.

The food went toward the Eastern Illinois Food Bank and its Food for Families Drive. But, the money will stay on campus to help students fill their own shelves.

Students could also volunteer to help out at the food bank when it opens. The first day is set for December 11. The pantry will be in the "S" Building on campus. It will be open from 7 am - 2 pm so students can get food before they start school or in between classes. They plan to be open every second Wednesday after that. For more information, click here.
