Penn, Godbold sign overseas

Penn to Italy, Godbold to Puerto Rico
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (UI Release) - Former University of Illinois players Karisma Penn and Adrienne GodBold have signed contracts with foreign professional teams. Penn will play for Umbertide in Italy's Serie A1, the top women's professional league in the country, while GodBold will join the Mayaguez Indians in the BSNF, Puerto Rico's top league. Umbertide's season goes from October through March, with the playoffs running through April. Mayaguez begins play in late August and the season runs through October.

Both had career seasons in 2012-13, as Penn earned honorable mention All-America honors and GodBold was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Penn averaged a team-high 19.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 2.2 blocks per game, to go along with 50.6 percent field-goal shooting to become the only player in the nation to rank among the top five in her conference in those five categories. She broke the Illinois season records for offensive rebounds (125) and made (179) and attempted (262) free throws, and became only the seventh player in Big Ten history with over 1,900 points and over 1,000 rebounds. She finished her career fourth in school history in scoring (1,965 points) and second in rebounds (1,043), and holds the career blocked shots record (271).

GodBold nearly doubled her scoring output from 2011-12 to 2012-13, improving from 8.0 points per game to 15.9. She tied for second in the Big Ten in steals during conference play (3.4 spg), third in offensive rebounds (3.6 rpg), fifth in scoring (17.7 ppg) and 10th in rebounding (7.3 rpg). She finished her career eighth in school history in steals (197) and recorded the only four double-doubles of her career in 2012-13.

Penn and GodBold join former Illini Jenna Smith (Maccabi Ramat Hen, Israel-D1) and Angelina Williams (Morovis M., Puerto Rico-BSNF) as current professional players.
