Piano player receives award

CHAMPAIGN -- A local man was born blind, but you would never know it by hearing his talent.
CHAMPAIGN -- An area man was born blind, but you would never know it by hearing his talent. 77-year old Donnie Heitler has been playing the piano his whole life.

Most of the time, you can hear his melodies in different restaurants. But his talent is known all over the world. Thursday, he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from 40 North. Heitler says he understands how being overwhelmed feels.

"It came as a total surprise. Totally unexpected. You don't plan your life to expect an award. Life doesn't work that way. For someone to single me out for such a nice award, it's a very humbling experience."

Hear his music for yourself. Heitler plays weekly at Minneci's and the Great Impasta.
