Police mourn K-9 death

PERU -- LaSalle County law enforcement is mourning the loss of one of its own.
PERU -- LaSalle County law enforcement is mourning the loss of one of its own.  The community gave a touching tribute to a police dog killed in the line of duty.

Officers were on the way to an armed robbery last weekend when they got into an accident. The K-9 was thrown 30 feet from the car.

Hundreds of people were at Friday's service. Many officers say K-9 units have a special bond and they must support each other.

Alsip's Chad Rezny said, "You know, it's really important to show your support for a fellow officer, especially a K-9 officer."

"The law enforcement community, when it comes to K-9, is a special brotherhood within law enforcement," confirmed Peru Police Chief Doug Barnabei.

Barnabei says the department has received thousands of dollars in donations for a new K-9.
