Protest proves violence hits close to home

URBANA -- The gun violence in Chicago is miles away, but for several UI students, it still hits close to home.
URBANA -- The gun violence in Chicago is miles away, but for several UI students, it still hits close to home. Dozens held a demonstration on the Quad Tuesday evening.

It included a moment of silence for victims. They held up signs showing statistics about the shootings in Chicago, as well as Champaign-Urbana.

One was dedicated to Desirae Austin. She was killed July 4, 2012, in Champaign. Organizers hope it influences people to prevent violence, not just stop it. The event continues Wednesday.

The parents of Hadiya Pendleton will be on campus to talk with students. Pendleton became nationally-known after being killed in a shooting in Chicago, just days after attending President Obama's inauguration.
