Salvation Army gets golden donation

CHAMPAIGN -- The Salvation Army has been hurting this season, but a special donation this weekend is helping fill the gap. Major Tom McDowell says someone put a half-ounce gold coin in the red kettle at Savoy's Walmart on Saturday. That's worth at least $600. He says finding the coin put a smile on his volunteer's faces.

"A teenager who was helping us process the donations held it up and said, what is this?" said McDowell. "And everybody saw that it was a good coin and we all started cheering."

McDowell says donations are only about 77% of what they got by this point last year -- about $146,000. Bell ringers will still be out Monday and Tuesday.
