School district worried about buses used for parties

CHARLESTON – A college party which turned violent has the local school district questioning whether it should renew its contract with a bus company. First Student provides about 50 buses for the district, but it also charters them out for private parties.

Some were used to bring people from EIU to a "Barn Party" earlier this month. Two people were shot and another beaten unconscious at the event. The superintendent worries a gun, drugs or alcohol could have been left on the buses.

"First Student had assured me that they had a two-man crew that spent, I believe,  about six hours cleaning those buses and getting them back in condition,” said superintendent Jim Littleford. “So I was very pleased to know that."

Littleford says at the very least, the district may try to limit which buses are used for private parties.
