CHAMPAIGN -- More than 12-million Americans will be victims of identity theft this year. So, consumers are taking matters into their own hands to protect themselves. They're shredding their old documents and took advantage of a free event Thursday.

Criminals look for social security and credit card numbers, but experts say that's not all. Even utility account information or student ID's can be used against you. So, one group did some spring cleaning.

State Representative Naomi Jakobsson reminds consumers they are entitled to one free credit report per year from each Consumer Reporting Agency. To contact all three agencies at once, use the following information:
