Shutdown could leave veterans unpaid

BARTONVILLE -- Area veterans worry the government shutdown could keep them from getting paid. Since the shutdown started October 1, hundreds of thousands of government employees have been furloughed.

Thousands of those workers are employed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Some payments to veterans are now threatened. Some vets say they're outraged by the way lawmakers are treating the situation.

Things could get worse if lawmakers don't reach a deal before October 17. That's the deadline for Congress to extend the debt ceiling.
