Soldier dad surprises kids

SPRINGFIELD -- Three students got the surprise of a lifetime Wednesday.
SPRINGFIELD -- Three students got the surprise of a lifetime Wednesday. Their dad has been overseas in the military for the past few months. They had no idea he was home until he showed up at their school. WCIA-3's Ashley Michels shares their reaction.

What kid doesn't get excited when they get to leave class a little bit early to go to an afternoon assembly? But, Skyllar, Alissa and Sean Razo had no idea just how exciting it would be.

They knew there was going to be a surprise guest, but they didn't know it was going to be their dad.

"It's been real tough being away from then and my wife. I just wanted to surprise them."

Ryan Razo has spent the past six months in Afghanistan as an airman with the National Guard. He says he can't wait for life to get back to normal.

"I'm very excited. It's hard for me to even explain how excited I am. I'm nervous. I'm getting real nervous now. I want to see the look on their face."

Here it is. With that hug, a standing ovation from the whole school, and a lot of tears.

"That's everything. Those are my life right there. I had to definitely choke back some stuff there, so I didn't bawl like a baby in front of everyone."

"I didn't think it was real at first."

"At first, I just froze."

"I didn't know what was going on and then, when I saw Dad, I just went out of control."

His kids say it was the perfect way to welcome him home. And they're not going to let him go anytime soon.

The kids say the best part of having Dad home is going to be getting to spend as much time with him as they want. They're going to spend the next few days catching up after so much time apart.
