Tax filing help available for those who qualify

SPRINGFIELD -- Some people who need help filing their income taxes can get a hand for free.
SPRINGFIELD -- Some people who need help filing their income taxes can get a hand for free. Families making less than $50,000/year and individuals making less than $25,000 can qualify for free tax preparation. They could also qualify for state and federal tax relief through the Earned Income Tax Credit.

The only place in Central Illinois is at the Family Service Center, in Springfield. That's where CPA's and volunteers through the Center for Economic Progress will being filing taxes starting January 22.

A spokesperson claims some families can get back as much as $6,000 from EITC programs. In many cases, they'll use it to keep them afloat.

Hours are limited leading up to April 15, so you might consider getting in early.

Here's what you'll need to bring in:
All W-2's and 1099's
Social Security Card
Photo ID

Other documents including:
2012 taxes
Property tax bill
Paperwork documenting college expenses
