UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS -- The UI band director could face criminal charges for selling thousands of dollars worth of instruments. Robert Rumbelow resigned after a complaint to the Ethics Office led to a police investigation.

Authorities determined he sold more than $50,000 worth of instruments to schools and collectors the past two years. Rumbelow is also accused of depositing the money into his own bank account.

Police say he admitted to selling the instruments but says he intended to give the money to the department. The current system only allows the school to trade old instruments, not sell them.

Authorities say 76 instruments appear to be missing. Program officials say they want to move forward and focus on what's important; students and music.

Rumbelow's name has already been removed from the directory in the band hall. He's set to appear in court in September for a charge of theft over $10,000.

The State's Attorney is reviewing the case. Police say he's been issued a no trespass order.
