URBANA -- The man whose invention essentially replaced the light bulb is retiring from the University of Illinois. Nick Holonyak is most known for creating the LED light.

He started his career in Electrical Engineering at the UI in the 1950's.  Since then, he's been a fixture, receiving honors for multiple inventions which have changed the world.

Holonyak is now 84-years old with health problems. Professor Milton Feng is a chair in the department, and he says he'll check in with Holonyak each week.

"You find a man who's a hundred times smarter than you, and you'll be able to talk to him every day, and so the interchange of ideas is a tremendous opportunity for us."

The University celebrated 50 years of the LED invention this year.
