Weather Vault: December 2012

<br>Here's a look at the weather highlights for December 2012.&nbsp;

Posted:  5:58 PM 1/1/13

The month of December started out foggy and warm.  Saturday, which was the first, had morning fog, as did the 2nd and 3rd.  However, Those days were in the 60s and 70s for highs.  Rain to start the day on Tuesday would cool things down.  Highs were only in the 50s for Tuesday and 40s for Wednesday.  Thursday was also in the 40s.

Friday brought back the rainfall that would look to stick around.  Temperature were in the upper 40s and lower 50s for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with rain throughout.  The heaviest rain was on Sunday which put totals over an inch in most of central Illinois for the three day event.  The backside of the system brought us colder temperatures and evening a few flurries for Monday, the 10th.

Plenty of sunshine returned to the area for Tuesday, the 11th, but highs were only near normal.  We would rise to above normal temperatures with plenty of sunshine from Tuesday the 12th through Friday the 15th.

The third weekend of December was also very wet with rain across the area on Saturday, especially in the morning.  Sunday was mostly dry, but the temperatures were falling throughout the day.

Monday would be a cloudy and gross day.  Off an on sprinkles, flurries, and light wintry mix were reported with temperatures in the middle 30s.  We had some calmer and warmer days on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Both days had highs around 50, but were on the breezy side with winds up to 30 mph.

Thursday brought our first widespread round of snow for the area.  The rain that started the day changed to snow between 9 AM and Noon.  While snow totals were only around 1", the winds of up to 35 mph with 50 mph gusts caused near whiteout conditions in someplaces. A high wind warning was in affect for the majority of the day, especially in the afternoon and evening. When the storm was over, snow totals were low and wind speeds did most of the damage.

The weekend that followed was much calmer, but chilly with highs only in the middle 30s. There was sunshine on Saturday and clouds on Sunday. The clouds stuck around for Monday and Christmas with just a few flurries here and there.

The day after Christmas brought another round of snow that affected areas such as Paris, Charleston Mattoon, and Effingham.  The rest of the area saw very little snow.  Over a foot of snow was reported in central Indiana through southern Illinois.

The day following the snow was Thursday, the 27th.  Temperatures were only in the 30s with lots of cloud cover.  The next day, the 28th, was another overcast day that brought some light snow.  The snow would stick around through the morning hours of Saturday.  Some places in southeastern central Illinois saw up to 2", but most places were below 1/2".

We actually saw some sunshine to end the day on Saturday and that stuck around into Sunday.  Highs both days were only around 30.  The last day of the year was a mostly cloudy day with highs in the lower to middle 30s.  Snow arrived in the evening and brought a few inches by the morning of the 1st for a few places.
