Weather Vault: January 5th - 7th 2014 snowstorm and bitter cold

Posted:  1/7/14

Sunday, January 5th 2014 started calm, but by noon, a major snowstorm was taking over.  By the middle of the afternoon, the winds picked up.  Because the snow was so light in nature, the winds caused blowing and drifting that led to white-out conditions across the entire area.  At one point or another, all of the roads in central Illinois were closed or impassable.  You can see in the picture above that most of the area saw 8 to 10 inches of snow or more.

During the afternoon hours of Sunday, the temperatures started to drop with winds staying strong.  Wind chills would drop to 45 degrees below zero in a few places, which is why the area was under a rarely issued wind chill warning for 36 hours.  The actual temperature was below zero for those 36 hours as well.
