Here's a look at the highlights of June 2012:

Local Highlights
June started off a bit on the cool side for the first four days with off an on clouds and some rainfall.  The 5th got temperatures back to normal with another normal day on Wednesday the 6th, but then the warm-up started.

The 7th temperatures slid about 2 to 5 degrees above normal and into the lower 80s.  The warmup continued to the upper 80s by Friday and into the lower 90s for the weekend.  The heat would be broken by a rainy Monday and a steamy night that followed.  While the rain was much needed, the rain missed the drought areas that needed the rain the most.

The sunshine returned for the 12th and 13th, but things stay at normal, or even a few degrees below normal.  However, by Thursday, the 14th, another warm-up was underway.  What also happened on this date was the release of the Drought Monitor.  By this point, the drought had spread to many places in central Illinois and all of central Illinois was considered to be "abnormally dry."

By Friday the 15th, we were back into the 90s in many places and the 90s were here to stay.  The weekend had two warm days, with a round of t-storms that brought some much needed rain to the area, but most places saw very little.  There was also a small microburst that did damage to a school in Rantoul

The next week would also start out very hot as Monday, the 18th, through the 20 were all into the 90s with a good amount of humidity.  Some rain arrived on the 21st, but it wasn't enough, once again.  The rain did cool things down into the middle 80s through the 23rd.  The weekend was a bit warmer and up to around 90.

The final full week of June 2012 started pretty cool with Monday the 25th and Tuesday the 26th being in the lower to middle 80s.  The 27th was the start of the next warm-up with highs into the middle 90s, but that was nothing compared to the low 100s that we saw the next day.  The rest of the month would stay hot with highs around 100 through the 30th.

Below is a look at the final numbers for select cities in central Illinois in June 2012.

Statewide
The entire state of Illinois had a very hot and dry June.  The worst part was towards the end of the month with highs in the upper 90s and lower 100s.    The statewide average for temperatures was 72.9 degrees, which is a full degree above normal.  However, it is not close to the record set in 1934 with an average of 78.5.

At the same time, rain was hard to find pushing parts of the state into a severe drought.  The statewide precipitation for June was 1.77", 2.3" below normal and 43% below normal.  While that is dry, it isn't as dry as June of 1988 which only had 1.05"

Nationally
We weren't the only on suffering in June from the heat.  The average temperature for the U.S. was 71.2, which is 2 degrees above the average.  January through June combined to be
the warmest first half of the year since record keeping began in 1895.  Also, the July 2011 to June 2012 period was the warmest 12 month period of any 12 month period on record.

Rainfall was mixed for June with the nation as a whole recording the 10th driest June on record.
