CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (UI Release) -- The Illinois wrestling team has been ranked No. 10 in WIN Magazine's preseason tournament power index (TPI). The TPI is WIN's prediction of how teams will finish at the 2014 NCAA Championships. Five Illini wrestlers earned top-15 preseason rankings, with reigning NCAA Champion Jesse Delgado earning the No. 1 spot at 125 pounds. Delgado's No. 1 ranking is the highest since Jimmy Kennedy was No. 1 in the 2010 season.
Mario Gonzalez, a 2013 NCAA qualifier and 2012 Big Ten Champion, comes into the year ranked No. 6 at 197 pounds after reaching a No. 5 ranking during the 2013 season. After redshirting last season, Jackson Morse is ranked No. 12 at 165 pounds, while 2013 NCAA qualifier Caleb Ervin is ranked No. 13 in the 149-pound weight class. Rounding out the Illini in the rankings is three-time NCAA Qualifier Tony Dallago, who moves down a weight class to earn a No. 14 rank at 174 pounds.
The Illini return one All-American and five NCAA qualifiers after finishing fifth at the Big Ten Championships and ninth at the NCAA Championships last season.
