Nathan Scheelhaase threw for a career high 416 yards as the Illini held on late to defeat Southern Illinois 42-34 in the season opener. Illinois had a 39-17 lead late in the third quarter, but SIU made a comeback to make things interesting. The Illini made a key stop on fourth down inside their own five yard line with less than a minute to go to seal the win. Scheelhaase was 28-36 for 416 yards passing and two touchdowns. Ryan Lankford had 115 yards receiving, while Josh Ferguson had 103 yards receiving and his first career touchdown. Ferguson also rushed for 49 yards. The Illini running game struggled, only netting 49 total yards. Illinois hosts Cincinnati next Saturday.
Leron Black is on the U of I campus this weekend for an official visit and was at the Illinois football game against Southern Illinois. He's a five star forward (2014) out of Memphis, Tennessee. According to multiple reports, the Illini are in good position to land Black. He is also considering Baylor, Indiana, and Tennessee.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois Director of Athletics Mike Thomas has announced the hiring of Ron Garner as the Fighting Illini's women's track and field head coach. Garner returns to Illinois with over 25 years of collegiate experience, including serving as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Illini women's track and field team from 1991-1998. Garner will be in Champaign Tuesday and will be made available for interviews at that time.
"It's terrific to be able to bring back a coach who was part of so much success here at Illinois," Thomas said. "Ron played a huge role in six Big Ten championships won by our teams and individuals during his first tenure here. He has a fantastic reputation as a recruiter and in developing championship-level student-athletes, and has a great love for the University of Illinois.
