Nathan Scheelhaase threw for a career high 416 yards as the Illini held on late to defeat Southern Illinois 42-34 in the season opener. Illinois had a 39-17 lead late in the third quarter, but SIU made a comeback to make things interesting. The Illini made a key stop on fourth down inside their own five yard line with less than a minute to go to seal the win. Scheelhaase was 28-36 for 416 yards passing and two touchdowns. Ryan Lankford had 115 yards receiving, while Josh Ferguson had 103 yards receiving and his first career touchdown. Ferguson also rushed for 49 yards. The Illini running game struggled, only netting 49 total yards. Illinois hosts Cincinnati next Saturday.
Leron Black is on the U of I campus this weekend for an official visit and was at the Illinois football game against Southern Illinois. He's a five star forward (2014) out of Memphis, Tennessee. According to multiple reports, the Illini are in good position to land Black. He is also considering Baylor, Indiana, and Tennessee.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois Director of Athletics Mike Thomas has announced the hiring of Ron Garner as the Fighting Illini's women's track and field head coach. Garner returns to Illinois with over 25 years of collegiate experience, including serving as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Illini women's track and field team from 1991-1998. Garner will be in Champaign Tuesday and will be made available for interviews at that time.
"It's terrific to be able to bring back a coach who was part of so much success here at Illinois," Thomas said. "Ron played a huge role in six Big Ten championships won by our teams and individuals during his first tenure here. He has a fantastic reputation as a recruiter and in developing championship-level student-athletes, and has a great love for the University of Illinois. DES MOINES, Iowa -- Sophomore Ashley Spencer continued her incredible track season as she qualified for the IAAF World Championships in the 400m. Spencer finished third in the 400m at the 2013 USATF National Championships to advance and compete for Team USA in Moscow, Russia August 10-18.
"Today was a great effort by Ashley," head coach Tonja Buford-Bailey said. "For her to make her first senior team, in her first try is truly outstanding. This is what she wanted to achieve all year. It was hard to run against that level of competition for three straight days. The race strategy is different in those types of races. She had to work really hard with 150 meters remaining. Her kick with 20 meters left was great. It's super exciting to make your first national team. I'm so happy for her."

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois head men's golf coach Mike Small was named Midwest Region Coach of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association on Friday, marking the fourth time in the last five years that he has earned the honor. It also is Small's fifth career regional coach of the year award, as he earned the accolade in 2003, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
Small led a very young Illini team to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships after the squad fell to Alabama in the championship match. The Orange and Blue defeated 2012 NCAA champion Texas and top-ranked California during the match-play portion after finishing fifth in stroke play. Illinois also won the Fayetteville Regional, the program's first regional title, and earned its fifth-straight Big Ten championship in 2013 and won its first-ever Big Ten Match Play Championship among six tournament victories, the second-most in program history.
Junior Thomas Pieters, who elected to become a professional following the season and is playing in the Scottish Hydro Challenge on the European Challenge Tour this weekend, notched the fourth-best season scoring average in school history on the way to earning PING third-team All-America and Big Ten Men's Golfer of the Year honors.
