Giving Back: Project READ

CHAMPAIGN,Ill - Dr. Amanda Harris, Program Manager for Project READ, and Julia Atkin, Project READ Volunteer, join the Morning Show and in this week's Giving Back they discuss the program and their need for volunteers.

1.1million people in Illinois do not have a high school diploma.  In addition, 1.1 million residents speak a language other than English and report that they speak English less than very well. Conservatively, roughly 2.2 million residents in Illinois (19 percent) have difficulty performing reading or math tasks or using printed or verbal information in English, keeping them from using printed and written information to function effectively at home, work, or in their communities. (Source: American Community Survey, 2010.) According to DataUSA.com (2018), 19.9% of the people in Champaign, and 25.8% of Urbana residents speak a non-English language at home.

Project READ (Reading Education for Adult Development) was developed to meet the basic literacy needs of adults within Parkland College District 505 who need and request help to improve their skills in reading, arithmetic, or English as a second language. Our program is made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, using funds designated for literacy.

Our training is a combination of face-to-face sessions, short, online articles and optional teacher observations. All of our tutors complete at least 12 hours-worth of training in some convenient combination of these options. We are unique because we prepare our volunteers with relevant background and techniques, we facilitate tutor-learner matches, help with goal setting, provide educational resource materials and expertise, and we give regular, monthly, expert-led workshops for tutor-professional-development.
