WX 101: Measuring & Recording Weather Conditions
Current weather conditions will give you a hint as to what is to come in weather forecast. In order to take and analyze current weather data, there are certain tools used to measure and record the weather. State Climatologist, Dr. Jim Angel, explains the different weather tools used in Central Illinois.
A thermometer is used to measure the current temperature, but there is now a temperature sensor that can be used to automatically send the reading indoors. The way to measure wind speed and direction is through an anemometer. Among other weather observation tools is a simple evaporation pan. The evaporation pan measures how much water is being evaporated by the sun. It is also important for the observation tools to be set in a location where they aren't influenced heavily by surrounding trees or other nearby objects.
