This Day In Weather History

1857 - A woman and three children were killed when a tornado hit Pana, in Christian County.  25 homes were destroyed and another 50 were damaged.  In some instances, it was hard to tell where the buildings had stood before the tornado.  The freight depot was unroofed and freight cars blown off the tracks.

1976 - The southwestern Chicago suburbs were hit by a slow-moving, large tornado that killed two people.  The tornado had winds of over 200 mph.  Areas near Downers Grove were hit.  There was $13 million in damage.  89 homes were destroyed and another 90 were damaged.  The tornado passed over the Argonne National Laboratory, peeling part of a roof off the building housing a nuclear reactor.  The tornadoes movement was rather erratic as the tornado first moved southeast, then north, and then turned west.
