This Day In Weather History1940 - Several tornadoes touched down in central and southern Illinois, including an F4 that moved across Johnson and Pope counties. The tornado reached its peak in Johnson County. Four farm homes were destroyed and 8 others were badly damaged. One person was killed by flying debris near Flatwoods. Other tornadoes touched down at Shawneetown in Gallatin County, in Alton, and near Bunker Hill in Macoupin County.
