This Day In Weather History1876 - An F3 tornado moved through Chicago and tore a 4 mile path. Many buildings, including a candy factory, a hospital, a freight depot, and a church were damaged. The tornado moved over Lake Michigan and observed to have multiple vortices. In southeast central Illinois, a tornado blew a moving passenger train off the tracks near Neoga, injuring the 19 people aboard.
2003 - The far southern tip of Illinois was hit by an F4 tornado. The touchdown was near Grand Chain (Pulaski County) and moved east to near Joppa (Massac County). The tornado the turned northeast and lifted near Golconda (Pope County). The tornado was on the ground for 33 miles or 1 hour and 10 minutes. Two people were killed and another 33 were injured. The forested region of the area had severe damage as well as damage to a few dozen homes and trailers. The storms also produced an estimated wind gust of 125 mph northeast of Metropolis.
2012 - Storm fired up along a warm front in Livingston, Ford, and Iroquois Counties. Those storms brought tornadoes, heavy winds, and heavy rainfall to those counties as well as Champaign and Vermilion County. You can get more on this day in our Weather Vault.
