Hood picked to lead State Farm Center renovations

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illinois Board of Trustees will vote Thursday on a $4.5 million budget increase for the State Farm Center renovation project.  According to the proposal, the extra money will go toward things such as a new scoreboard, video board and marquee.  If approved, that would bring the total budget for the renovation up to $169.5 million.

Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas announced Wednesday Warren Hood will replace Tom Michael as senior associate athletic director overseeing the State Farm Center renovation, after Michael was introduced Tuesday as athletic director at Eastern Illinois.

Hood has worked in the Illinois Department of Intercollegiate Athletics since 1990, and he is no stranger to renovation projects.  He helped oversee the Memorial Stadium renovation that was completed in 2008.  Thomas says he is confident Hood will work closely with Michael over the next few weeks to make sure the handoff is seamless.

"That project is not gonna stop," Thomas said Tuesday before announcing Hood's promotion.  "It's like a freight train going down the tracks, and we can't have any hiccups along the way.  So I think we'll be in good hands.  Tom is with us until I think August 10th.  Our time with Tom is very short, and I say that because when you get in these transition periods you want him to spend as much time with other people to hand that off the appropriate way.  And I know that's important to him, and it's certainly important to me."
